Latest Pictures from Miandasht

27, 2004- Latest efforts in camera trapping survey have resulted in several
pictures of the Asian Steppe Cat Felis sylvestris (ornata) in
Miandasht Cheetah Reserve, Iran plus a collection of Canids, particularly
wolf. Unlike the other cheetah habitats in the country where the cheetah and
the striped hyena can be seen at the same area, It is the first recorded
time among the Iranian cheetah habitats that both the cheetah and the wolf
can be seen highly at the same places in similar habitats.

ICS wildlife staffs visit Miandasht monthly to check the cameras in 8 points
where have been diagnosed to be the best to set the cameras with a backbone
of less than 1 year tracking the cheetahs. Following the heavy
investigation, the first picture of the cheetah was captured on 22nd Sep
which was a great success

In order to obtain the relative abundance of the cheetah in the area, ICS
has launched a camera trapping survey since Sep with financial support from
some US&UK funding organizations. The final objective of the Miandasht
Cheetah Project is to estimate cheetah population size (absolute abundance)
via the approach of capture-recapture as a world well-known technique in
camera trapping surveys.
