The Latest Reference on the Cheetahs in Iran

Aug 8, 2004- A report on the cheetahs in Iran has been recently published in Cat News, entitled "The Last Stronghold: Cheetah in Iran" by Mohammad Farhadinia, Director of the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS) and a member to IUCN/Cat Specialist Group. The report is begun with an introduction to the Iranian cheetah in past and discusses about the causes leading to the present situation. Then, the main cheetah habitats have been introduced, describing the cheetah, its prey and rival species in the areas and finally present and potential threats to the cheetah survival inside each reserve are discussed. Since 2001, ICS has focused on several intermediate areas between the confirmed cheetah reserves in the country to verity the cheetah existence which form another part of the report. An updated map shows position of the present cheetah habitats in the country.

As the official newsletter of IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group,  Cat News is published 2 times annually, spring and autumn, composed of various papers and reports about the cat species in the world plus with the latest relevant news. It was more than 2 decade that no Iranian expert had written any comprehensive report on the overall status of the Iranian cheetahs in an international journal. Due to lack of any reference on the cheetahs in Iran as the only remained population of the cheetah outside Africa, the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS) has been publishing several scientific and general papers and report in Farsi and English.
